Five instrumentalists form the basis of this original group of players. Three sackbut-players: Alain RECORDIER (tenor and alto), Thierry QUATREHOMME (tenor) and Jean-Luc THAUVIN (bass), and two cornett-players: Serge DELMAS and Frédéric MALMASSON.

The SACKBUT, forerunner of the modern trombone, is mentioned in writings from the XVth century onwards. It owes its name to two old French verbs, "sacquer" (to pull) and "bouter" (to push), reflecting the movements of the arm working the slide.

The only differences between the sackbut and the trombone are the diameter of the bore and the size of the bell.

The cornett goes back to the early XIVth century. The instrument is distinctive in belonging as much to the brass family (in its method of producing sound) as to the woodwind family (in its manufacture). These two qualities endow it with a generous and powerful sound, as well as a suppleness and velocity which make it a key feature of all kinds of music in Renaissance times and during the early Baroque period. It was played in all the courts of Europe and was the ideal instrument for use in the open air, in chambers and in chapels.

The cornett and the sackbut, although still little-known in our own day, were omnipresent in the musical life of the XVth, XVIth and XVIIth centuries. Their versatility, due in essence to the distinctive qualities of the sounds they produced, enable them, for example, to play a part in the official ceremonies of the court, such as festivities, weddings and the entry of important persons, and in balls, but especially made them the most suitable instruments for supporting chantry choirs in churches.

The Musicque de Joye ensemble plays on copies of XVIth and XVIIth century instruments.

The cornetts are made by Serge Delmas in the manner of Italian models held in the great museums of Europe. The sackbuts are made by the German maker Ewald Meinl in Geretsried, near Munich.
